Add Random Questions to a Quiz from the Question Bank

Note: To successfully add random questions to a quiz you must have enough unused questions in your question bank to avoid reusing questions already added to the quiz. A question can only appear once in any quiz, so the more questions in the category you are drawing from, it is more likely for students to receive different questions on each attempt. When a quiz with random questions is retaken, the random questions will be different from the ones in previous attempts.

Step 1

On your course page, click the Quiz name. The Quiz summary page will open.

Step 2

On the Quiz summary page, select the Actions menu (Screenshot of icon for Action menu), a drop-down list will open. From the Action menu drop-down list select Edit quiz. The Editing quiz page will open. If the Quiz already contains questions, they'll be listed here.

Step 3

Click Add (at far right), and from the drop-down menu select + a random question. The Add a random question window will open.

Step 4

In the Add a random question window, under Existing category, use the Category drop-down menu to select the category from which to draw questions.

Step 5

From the Number of random questions drop-down menu, select the number of questions the quiz should pull from this category. For example, if the category has ten questions and you select "5", each quiz attempt will take a random five questions from the ten questions in this category.

Step 6

Click Add random question. The Editing quiz page will open listing the question(s) as Random (category name).

Step 7

On the Editing quiz page, each time you click the Preview icon (Screenshot of Preview icon) for the question, you should see a different question.

Important: To ensure you have enough unused questions in the Question category to successfully randomize questions, you should preview the entire quiz. You can do this from the Actions menu on the Quiz summary page: From the Actions menu list, click Preview.

Add or Remove Page Breaks

By default a Moodle Quiz activity creates a new page for each question. To change this default for your quiz see the New Page options under the Layout heading of the Configure Quiz Options page. You can also add page breaks or combine pages after you've added questions to your quiz:

  1. On your course page, click the Quiz name. The Quiz summary page will open.
  2. On the Quiz summary page, select the Actions menu (Screenshot of icon for Action menu), a drop-down list will open. From the Action menu drop-down list select Edit quiz. The Editing quiz page will open.
  3. On the Editing quiz page:
  • To combine adjacent questions on a quiz page, click the Remove page break icon (remove page break). The questions will appear on the same page in the quiz.
  • To add a page break between two questions, on the Editing quiz page, click the Add page break icon () . A new page will be added below that question.
  • To repaginate the entire quiz and set the number of questions per page, click Repaginate (at top).

4.No saving is necessary.

Add Section Headings to Quiz Pages

Section headings display within the Quiz navigation block when students are taking a quiz.

Note: Section headings may only be added to the top of new pages within a quiz (see Add or Remove Page Breaks, above). You will not be able to add/edit headings once the Quiz has been attempted.

On your course page, click the Quiz name. The Quiz summary page will open.

Step 2

  • To add a Section heading to a page, click Add (at right), and from the drop-down, select + a new section heading. The page will refresh and a new section heading will appear. Note: You will not see the option to add a section heading above the first question.
  • To edit the Section heading text, click the Edit Heading (Screenshot of edit heading icon) icon, then press Enter/Return on your keyboard.

  • To edit the maximum value for the question, click the Edit maximum mark icon (Screenshot of the link to enter max points) (at far right), enter a new value and press enter/return on your keyboard.
No saving is necessary.
